Here, at Eden Brothers, we want to suggest that customers, especially those new to gardening, buy cabbage seeds now. Cabbage is a leafy and hardy vegetable, entertains cooler temperatures and may also attract pests. However, if you take special care and plan in advance, you can reap two crops in one growing season – both in the spring and in the fall.

Planting the Seeds

Start by planting seeds inside for eight weeks prior to the last frost of spring. Refer to the Farmer’s Almanac to see what dates pertain to your area. Transplant the cabbage plants outside a couple weeks before the last anticipated frost date, preferably when the sky is overcast.

When you sow the seeds, place them in the soil about ½ inch down. After they are sown, keep the seeds moist and thin the plantings out to a desired spacing one they begin to grow. Fertilize cabbage after it has been transplanted and add nitrogen when the plant is half-grown. Cabbage produces better heads if the soil is regularly kept moist. Once you see the heads of the plant, it is ready to harvest.

We suggest that you plant the new plantings in rows about two feet apart. If you want the cabbages’ heads to be bigger, then it is best to allow about 24 inches in between each plant. Mulch the area in order to regulate the temperature of the soil and retain the surrounding moisture.

Warnings about Planting

While you may want to buy cabbage seeds along with seeds for cauliflower and broccoli, you do not want to plant all these plants together as doing so deplete nutrients in the soil. You also do not want plant cabbages close to tomatoes or strawberries.

Buy Cucumber and Bean Seeds Along With Cabbage Seeds

However, the plant will thrive well when planted near cucumbers and beans. Therefore, when you buy your cabbage seeds from us here at Eden Brothers, you may as well as put in an order for cucumber and bean seeds.
