Granite is a natural material that consists of quartz, silica, mica and other materials that are in the earth’s magma or molten core. People who choose countertops made from granite in Palm Beach County do so because of its very distinctive beauty. Every slab of granite is unique, the crystalline structure and variations in color are never the same from one source to the next. Granite never fades or lose its brilliance over time. Granite in Palm Beach County is sourced from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, China and many other parts of the world.
There are a number of factors that enter into the price of a granite counter top; chief among them of course is the area in square feet. Other factors include the edge trim and backsplash. The standard edge trim is a ¼” beveled edge but many other trims such as bull nose will increase the price. Although granite is perhaps the most durable stone next to diamond, the material itself cannot be warranted because it is natural; however, the installation of the countertop can most certainly be accompanied by a warranty.
There are very few materials that have an effect on granite but there are some; mustard, wine and oil are a few. Granite is heat resistant and will not scratch, crack or blister unlike other materials. Granite countertops are easy to clean with nothing more than warm water and soap and granite is naturally antibacterial so there is no fear of mold growth.
Periodically granite needs to be tested to determine if it requires sealing. Perhaps once a year take time to see if water is actually soaking into the granite rather than beading on the surface. If water does bead the granite can be sealed with noting more than a couple of coats of non-yellowing floor wax, there is no special skills or expertise required to keep a granite surface looking perfect.
Although granite is extremely tough anything can break if the circumstances are just right. If a section of countertop needs replacing it will never match the original. During installation the installers try to avoid seams but in some cases, especially an “L” shaped top it is difficult not to have seams. The only top that can be produced without seams, regardless of the shape is Corian. The seams that are unavoidable are filled during installation with color coordinated epoxy fill.
