People nowadays have become highly concerned about environmental protection and the adverse effects of global warming. These can be traced as far back as excessive denudation of our tropical rainforests in the eve of industrialisation and commerce.

In early 1990s, composite decking was introduced as a great innovation to the building industry by means of timber alternative products. But for people who are not abreast with such advances in technology, wood remains to be wood so to speak. So let us classify the difference between the traditional hardwood timbers to what is now called composite wood timber.

Traditional hardwood timbers like Merbau comes from the trees that are cut down from forests. Although people from all governments across the world strive for reforestation or massive tree planting, these newly planted trees will take time to grow and replace the ones that are currently cut down for commercial and industrial use. So to answer the call of environmental protection and save some of our trees, composite wood was developed.

Composite wood (alternative timber products) are made of 100% recycled materials. They are composed of a combination of recycled plastic HDPE (high density polyethylene post industrial waste), discarded rice husks, and wood flour (sawdust). To create that classic finish, colour pigments, UV inhibitors and anti fungal solutions were added. Composite wood does not contain harmful chemicals that can cause harm to the soil, water or air. So, each composite wood product is not just Eco-friendly, but also resistant to rotting, splintering and mould/mildew formations.

Because it has recycled plastic as one of its components, composite wood is resistant to rotting. It does not split, crack, bend or warp over time due to harsh weather conditions, as well as being resistant to termite and white ant infestations. It also has a low water absorption rate, making it immune to swelling, splints or chips after being soaked in water or prolonged heavy rainfall (handy if you live in Brisbane).

Overall, composite decking has proven to be an excellent timber alternative that does not require regular maintenance thus making it a cost effective solution in the long run.
