Not many people know this, but even a fake security camera will discourage potential thieves and vandals. Of course, a fake one won’t scare away everyone, but a real security camera can help you to protect your home, belongings, car, or business by providing real-time security. If you work and live in Chicago, you know that there are places where only a security camera can do the job of providing much needed surveillance and therefore protection.

Who Uses Security Cameras?

The most frequent use of security cameras in Chicago are for businesses and garages. If you have valuable inventory, such as a garage full of cars, it’s likely that you’ll hire someone to watch over that inventory 24 hours a day. A security guard is a great idea, but if someone wants to subdue one person, they’ll figure out how. If you set up your security guard somewhere out of reach, but equip them with security cameras and video systems, they’ll be able to alert back up and they’ll see the crime before the criminal sees them.

Of course, there are also plenty of private residences in the Chicago land area that use security cameras, too. Some people like to have a security camera at their front door, or at secondary entrances where they may not be expecting visitors. These types of residential security camera systems tend to discourage potential crimes and are rarely used to actually catch someone in the act. But they also allow the people inside to identify who’s at the door, before they open it, which can be a very important thing to do in certain situations.

Cost vs. Benefit

Some would say that installing a security camera is too expensive. They say that the benefits do not outweigh the high cost. But consider again the fact that many crimes can be avoided or discouraged if you simply have a few things in place. Well lit areas are less likely to be the location of a crime. Places with security cameras will discourage the majority of potential crimes. The benefits may be hard to measure, if the installation of a security camera actually prevents a crime from being committed.

And these days, you can purchase high quality security cameras and systems at a very reasonable price. The technology has advanced and become less expensive. If you’re considering a security camera for your Chicago home or business, you may get more than your money’s worth without even knowing it.
