Does your home feel a little crowded or cramped? Sure, an addition would be nice, but there’s an easier – and less costly – way to get more space: Make better use of the space you have. The first place to start: Reclaiming unused space that could be repurposed into something more useful. Here are some remodeling ideas for your new home.

Basements
Most basements are dark spaces where holiday decorations, old toys and other items that don’t get much use are stored, and while they may not seem like the most inviting spots for a space conversion, actually they can be a great place to reclaim space for other purposes. Converting a basement to a complete living space can be costly, but consider upgrading that dank laundry area to a more inviting spot with countertops for folding laundry, “real” walls covering the concrete blocks, ample lighting and sturdy cabinets for storage of laundry supplies, and suddenly, the basement doesn’t seem like such an unwelcoming spot. Converting to a workshop, exercise room, wine cellar or music studio are other ideas. Make sure to address moisture problems as your first step.

Attics
Drier than basements, attics also offer a lot of unused space. Upgrade your insulation and add heating and air conditioning to keep it comfortable, then consider repurposing it for a playroom or home office. In some cases – especially I you have a teenager or older child living at home – and attic can make a pretty comfortable bedroom. Just be aware that attic floor are typically wood which means sound can be transmitted fairly easily, so this is probably not the place to locate a music studio.

Garages
Even a small garage usually has space for a washer and dryer or wall-mounted shelves and workspace countertop. Or add a slim bench, hooks and locker-style cabinets for an instant mudroom to keep coats and boots corralled. Larger garages could provide space for a music studio or home office, and they’re usually easily retrofitted for additional wiring and even Internet connection. Plus, you can gain more space by adding an inexpensive shed and relocating yard equipment and tools.

Adding more space doesn’t have to cost a lot of money; it just takes a little creative thinking and careful planning. Get out your pencil and paper and get started!
