The Movement of the Statue

Since 1996, a non-profit organization by the name of Figli di San Gennaro have presented The Feast of San Gennaro. They are also called the Children of San Gennaro, after the Patron Saint of Naples who was killed in 305 A.D. for keeping the faith. The festival itself lasts 11 days, and brings over 1 million visitors each year. In the middle of the celebration, the statue of San Gennaro is moved from Most Precious Blood Church around the streets of Little Italy in his honor.

The Cannoli Eating Competition

A lot of us who were born American probably don’t know a whole lot about authentic Italian Cuisine. In fact, the closest many of us have ever gotten to seeing what’s labeled as “real” Italian food was in the movies or on classic TV series such as “The Sopranos”. That is, unless you live in Little Italy, or maybe are looking for a New York apartment for sale that is close to this lovely section of Manhattan. That being said, many people don’t really know what Cannolis are.

Famed Cook Martha Stewart is well-known for her many years of showing her dedicated fans recipe after delicious recipe, and has lit up our kitchens at home with hundreds of combinations that may have had some origin and influence that stemmed from her Sicilian roots. Cannolis are one of the things she showcases on her website, and there she shows us a Classic Recipe for some that include fresh ricotta (not custard like the American variations). She also rolls the dough with a real pasta tool the traditional way. Finally, Martha fries them just a little and dips them in chocolate. Add a nice cup of coffee, and you’re set.
