You might be looking at your kitchen and trying to decide what it is you can do to spruce it up a bit and give it a fresher look and feel. It might be that nothing necessarily needs to be replaced, but as you look at your kitchen cabinets you think that you could possibly simply reface them to help achieve the results you’re after. But if you’ve never actually done any refacing work, you’ll need to know where to begin and just what to do to make sure you get the best quality results out of your work. Here are some things to consider once you’ve decided to reface your cabinets.
When doing doors, you’ll need to remove them from their hinges in order to work on them properly. You’ll also need to remove the hinges entirely from the doors so as not to damage them while you’re working on them. Don’t forget to also remove the handles if your cabinet doors happen to have them. Assuming that you are planning to repaint or restain the doors, you’re going to need paint or stain stripper to start off with, as the old layers need to be removed before new layers can be applied. Be sure to follow the instructions on the stripper properly and make sure to wear protective gear as some chemical strippers can irritate the skin. Once the stripper has had time to do its job, use a paint scraper to remove everything that’s come loose. Use sandpaper lightly over the surface to remove any paint or stain that’s left behind, and then wipe everything down thoroughly to remove all dust and bits of residue that are on the surface. Keep in the mind that the surface needs to be totally clean before you begin to reface the cabinets
Once ready, you can begin to apply the new paint or stain, and be sure to follow any instructions given with the products. Paint should be applied with a brush and stain should be applied with a rag. This is going to be a messy project, so be sure that you’re working in an area where it’s okay to get things dirty. Also consider simply working outside due to the vapors that paints and stains can give off. You are going to need to apply more than one layer of either paint or stain, and should give the cabinets a decent enough period to rest between coats. This should probably be at least a day, though may take longer depending on the brand of paint or stain you’ve chosen.
Once everything is completely finished, use a good sealant to protect against moisture and then rehang everything back in its original place. Stand back and enjoy a job well done.
